Earth Day & the Winter/Spring Garden Club
How do you have a garden club in the middle of one of Wisconsin's coldest winters on record? The answer was to bring a little spring into our homes by making some tulip bulbs think it was spring. But finding bulbs in January proved to be a challenge.
I went on a road trip around Madison's garden shops only to find that there were none to be found in January. Discouraged, I started to drive home, but thought of one more place. This time I decided to call, thinking I'd save myself another disappointing detour. Instead, I ended up talking to Kory, the garden shop manager at Home Depot, and not only came back to school with a couple of bags of tulip bulbs, but an enthusiastic and generous partner that made our small garden club a terrific success!
Before you could say springtime, Home Depot supplied us with soil, pebbles, sand, spaghnum moss and a flat of the most beautiful succulent plants to build terrariums. Members of the garden club unleashed their boundless creativity to build mini-worlds filled with panda bears, beachscapes,

Celebrating Arbor Day by planting oaks in the prairie
Friday's clubs coincided with Arbor Day last Friday, and the Prairie Restoration Club was busy planting 3 oak trees in the prairie near Eagle School. Fitchburg Forester, Ed Bartell, guided the students, but commented that of all the student groups he has planted trees with, this was the only one who actually did all the work! The club is working on a long range plan to restore the prairie and add features such as a teaching and observation amphitheatre. The club, along with the Nature Club, will also be banding trees around the school as part of a global Citizen Science research project organized by the Smithsonian Institute to measure the impact of climate change on tree growth. We also plan to plant a nursery of prairie plants near the school for later dividing and transplanting into the prairie. We are awaiting news on a grant we applied for from WEEB. As you can see, Fitchburg's F.A.C.Tv was there to record the event.
