Ecology Unit
The first part of the year, we will be studying Ecology. We'll be spending time outdoors investigating what a habitat is, what it provides to the organisms living in it, and what adaptations these organisms have that allow them to acquire the resources they need. Even though we won't be together this year, you can investigate the habitats near your home. Always make sure that you are wearing appropriate clothing and have adult supervision - especially when you're near water.
As the unit progresses, we'll learn about and construct food chains and webs, and we'll see how energy is passed along the trophic pyramid. We'll construct a food web based upon our findings. And we'll learn a little more about biomes (picking up from what you learned with Sarah last year.) Finally, we'll choose an organism to write about and then report to the class on our findings.
Students will learn how to make and record observations, do field and information research, take notes, write thorough explanations in complete sentences and write a report and present it orally to classmates. And, we might even do an owl pellet dissection. This website will contain notes, complementary information and interactive websites as a supplemental resource. Typically, students are expected to read, watch and do interactives on a weekly assigned web page and then answer questions related to that page on a Google Classroom assignment, but given our new circumstances, I'll likely change that up a bit. We'll see what works best.
MaggiesScienceConnection (MSC) will be updated as we move through the unit. During this unit students will be assessed in part using quizzes in the form of a closed book test that will contain several of the following types of questions: multiple choice, matching, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, draw and label. Students will want to keep their science binder organized and make sure to keep ALL science papers in it. NEVER throw away science work! You'll need it for projects, research and studying for quizzes.
